On Wednesday, October 6, close to 400 people attended the Specsavers SCC event, livestreaming across Australia and New Zealand.

Sponsored by Topcon, this week’s session focused on the management and treatment of glaucoma, featuring presentations from Dr Nathan Kerr, Glaucoma specialist at CERA and Eye Surgery Associates and Dr Smita Agarwal, Glaucoma specialist at Wollongong Eye Centre.

Dr Nathan Kerr completed a prestigious fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, the world’s first eye hospital. He is also an an experienced cataract and glaucoma surgeon, an internationally-recognised expert in managing complex cases, and has trained numerous surgeons in innovative surgical techniques.

Dr Kerr discussed the latest research in cataract surgery outcomes in patients with glaucoma and explained the benefits of different types of IOL for patients with glaucoma. He also addressed minimally-invasive glaucoma surgery that can be done during cataract surgery.

Dr Smita Agarwal is a senior comprehensive ophthalmologist based on the South Coast of NSW. She is also a Clinical Associate Professor at the Graduate Medicine, University of Wollongong and a Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney. She specialises in cataract and refractive surgery and has a special interest in corneal cross-linking for progressive Keratoconus, Glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration.

Dr Agarwal’s presentation covered all aspects of angle closure glaucoma. From identifying suspects to managing patient’s post-intervention. Dr Agarwal’s presented on a number of important clinical pearls for optometrists.
